Next week will decide a lot in our country and in our state. While most of us have been caught up watching the Presidential debates and coverage on foreign policy and creating new jobs we can’t forget that this election we have some critical choices to make on local and statewide races. Before filling out your ballot and voting for anyone do your research and find out where they stand on hunting, fishing, trapping and gun ownership. Call them up on their campaign phones or email them to ask specific questions on the use of dogs/bait for cougar bear management, if they support the proposed ban on trapping and if they support ranchers taking wolves that are killing their livestock or a threat to human safety. Make it a priority to know who you are voting for and most importantly make sure you vote!
The more pro-hunting, fishing and trapping policy makers we elect the better we can manage our resources. For 18 years Oregon’s legislature has failed to act and allow science-based management of bear and cougar populations with the use of dogs and or bait. They have failed to allow the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to do their job with the necessary tools. So, before you cast your vote make sure the people you are supporting will stand with sportsmen and women when casting their vote.
Don’t forget to fill out your ballot and drop it off at a local ballot collection site!
